🤷🏼 Purpose
To honour absent friends, lost loved ones, and ancestors by reserving a seat at the table. This ritual creates a physical and metaphorical space for remembrance, gratitude, and connection with those who cannot physically be present but remain in our hearts.
📝 Preparation
- Materials Needed:
- A chair set at the table.
- Optional: A symbolic item (e.g., a candle, photo, or flower, their favourite drink) to place on the chair or table setting.
- Optional: A small card or note to explain the meaning of the chair for guests who may not be familiar with the ritual. Or you can simply explain it to everyone in person.
- Time Required: 5 minutes for set up; the chair remains in place throughout the meal.
- Who Participates: All guests can contribute by sharing memories or thoughts throughout the meal.
✅ Instructions
1. Setting the Chair
- Place a spare chair at the table, set with a plate, glass, and utensils as though ready for a guest.
- Add a symbolic, meaningful object or talisman to the chair or place setting, such as:
- A candle to represent light and memory.
- A photo or memento of a loved one.
- A flower or feather as a sign of remembrance.
2. Introduction
- Before the meal begins or during the opening toast, gather the group and explain the purpose of the spare chair:
- “This chair is set to honour those who cannot be with us today—whether they are loved ones who have passed, friends who are far away, or ancestors who paved the way for us. We acknowledge their presence in spirit and celebrate their lives and their importance in ours.”
3. Moment of Reflection
- Invite everyone to take a moment of silence to reflect on those being honoured.
- Option: Light a candle in their memory.
